A PLEA: President Obama, the LIFE of Leonard Peltier is in YOUR Hands!

LP-live

UPDATE: April 24, 2016; 4 months later….although Leonard had his “surgical evaluation” and was told he would be “monitored”, there have been no steps taken to actually address treating his Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm. This is still a potentially deadly situation. If his Aneurysm ruptures, emergency treatment needs to be rapidly performed. We’re talking within a matter of minutes; this will not happen within a prison environment. Without preemptive surgery to remove and repair the Aneurysm before it ruptures, Leonard has basically been handed a death sentence by the United States Federal Bureau of Prisons. A Call-to-Action remains in place for his supporters > https://gem.godaddy.com/s/3dc1a7?o=tm President Obama, as important as it is for Leonard to be given Executive Clemency; the truth of the matter is that he needs to be ALIVE first and foremost. I urge you to grant him Clemency now in order for him to get the appropriate and timely medical intervention he needs…and deserves. Thank You.
UPDATE: January 27, 2016; it has been past the 2 weeks that Leonard was told he would have a surgical evaluation; the following in fax/letter/e-mail form was sent to the the following individuals >> To: Warden Tamyra Jarvis @ USP Coleman 1, Helen J. Marberry @ FOP; Southeast Regional Office, Director Charles Samuels @ Federal Bureau of Prisons >>
Please excuse my curtness; this is an URGENT Letter regarding the Health of Federal Prisoner Leonard Peltier #89637-132. As you may or may not know recently Leonard was diagnosed with a life-threatening health risk at USP Coleman 1; an enlarged Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm. For close to a year now he had complained of feeling increasingly ill and had continually requested medical evaluation and treatment. An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm is a potentially deadly, but treatable condition. Once discovered to be enlarged, it is watched closely and eventually the only intervention is surgery. It is hard to say how fast an Aneurysm of this type will grow, so surgery is scheduled as soon as possible, especially when it is seen to be enlarged. Without surgery the risk of the artery bursting is extremely high and death is imminent. On January 10th, a MRI confirmed this diagnosis and Leonard is waiting for the next step which should be a surgical evaluation and then surgery; this has not yet transpired. My deep concern is that from a number of past communications with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, specific Prisons that Leonard has resided in, the Justice Department and Others (including Presidents) I truthfully know that he has NOT received timely medical treatment for serious health problems (even though I was told he had) and all this has taken its toll on him.
This year marks the 40th year of incarceration for Leonard. He has suffered greatly during his long imprisonment; ineffective treatment of Diabetes, Heart Disease, Stroke, delayed treatments from brutal beatings and assassination attempts, botched jaw surgery and more. Much of this is public record. Due to Leonard’s pre-existing medical conditions, surgery will be more risky. He will need to be as medically stable as possible prior to surgery and monitored closely afterwards. It is doubtful that the Prison system can or will afford him this type of treatment. Leonard’s request is to be evaluated and treated at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN; they have through the years stated that they are willing to have him in their care.
I am respectfully asking that you ensure that Leonard gets the timely, appropriate and compassionate medical treatment that is his constitutional right. I remind you of the following: …“to willfully neglect, refuse to administer or procrastinate giving humane treatment and healthcare to prisoners is torture. So too is withholding needed treatment and care for political and bureaucratic reasons. I refer you to the United States Constitution, the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and to the Geneva Convention; although the Geneva Convention refers to War, prison in my mind is War”…. BFW .
Thank You for your time and consideration.  In Peace.

Dear President Obama (and Others who should be concerned),

Please excuse my curtness; this is an URGENT Letter regarding the Health of Native American Federal Prisoner Leonard Peltier #89637-132. As President your Executive Power enables you to pardon, grant clemencies, commute sentences and more for Federal Inmates. As such, your Executive Power also holds you at least partially responsible for the life, health, and death of each Federal Inmate. Not only are you Commander-in-Chief of the United States Military, you are also Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Prison System; a daunting task to say the least. Very recently Leonard was diagnosed with a life-threatening health risk. For close to a year now he had complained of feeling increasingly ill and had continually requested medical treatment at USP Coleman 1. Leonard was finally seen by Prison Medical Staff and diagnosed with an enlarged Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm; a potentially deadly, but treatable condition. Once an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm is discovered to be enlarged, it is watched closely and eventually the only intervention is surgery. It is hard to say how fast an Aneurysm of this type will grow. Without surgery the risk of the artery bursting is extremely high and death is imminent. On January 10th, a MRI confirmed this diagnosis and Leonard is waiting for the next step which should be a surgical evaluation. My deep concern is that from a number of past communications with both the Federal Bureau of Prisons and specific prisons that Leonard has resided in I truthfully know that he has NOT received timely medical treatment for serious health problems and all this has taken its toll on him.

This year marks the 40th year of illegal and wrongful incarceration for Leonard. He has suffered greatly during his long enslavement; ineffective treatment of Diabetes, Heart Disease, Stroke, delayed treatments from brutal beatings and assassination attempts, botched jaw surgery and more. The FBI and others have done all they can to keep Leonard incarcerated and his death has long been awaited by those who manipulated the law and put him in prison in the first place thanks to J.Edgar Hoover’s COINTELPRO (which still exists today under different names). Much of this is public record and no President including you thus far has had the courage to step up and release Leonard from his 40-year wrongful imprisonment.

Suffice it to say both you and Leonard are in precarious positions. Leonard is waiting for needed surgery (and all the worry and fear that comes with it) and wondering if each breath he takes will be his last. You are saddled with undoing a grievous wrong put upon one man by the United States Government to cover up their own wrong doings to Native Americans in 1975 (also public knowledge). The bottom line is that Leonard can do nothing more than wait; you can immediately put forth a Grant of Executive Clemency OR a Compassionate Release (without all the red tape) and ensure that Leonard gets the timely, appropriate and compassionate medical treatment that is his constitutional right. I remind you of the following:

…to willfully neglect, refuse to administer or procrastinate giving humane treatment and healthcare to prisoners is torture. So too is withholding needed treatment and care for political and bureaucratic reasons. I refer you to the United States Constitution, the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and to the Geneva Convention; although the Geneva Convention refers to War, prison in my mind is War…. BFW .

For 4 decades, Leonard Peltier has been *tortured by The United States Government and its agencies. *referenced by the United States Constitution, the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and the Geneva Convention…. BFW

Once again I respectfully Thank You for your time and consideration.  In Peace.

  1. Mr. President Obama,
Please give Leonard Peltier his freedom to go home & spend the rest of his remaining life with his families.

    Thank you

    • Thank You Jeannie. I hope you will also send a letter to President Obama on Leonard’s behalf. The letters I post to my blog are mailed to him in a professional format and sent via USPS.

  2. Bonnie, your letters resonant truth, compassion, and clarity of judgement with respect to Leonard past and present, I commend your efforts. John Bean ILPDC board member

  3. Dear President Obama,

Please, please, please pardon and release Leonard Peltier. The wrongs we have done to Native Americans are legion and profound. Forty years of imprisonment for justifiably protesting against those wrongs is far beyond the scope of justice and only adds to those injustices. Now, as Mr. Peltier is seriously ill and approaching death, it is unnecessarily cruel. Please show him some mercy, and send him home to die among those who love and revere him.

I campaigned the streets of Portland OR for you. I donated regularly to your campaign though I am retired and was living on a fixed income even then. I believe you are a good and decent man, though some of your policies and actions have rankled me. I love the dignity, elegance and respect that you, Michelle and your beautiful daughters have restored to the White House. Please do not let Leonard Peltier, who is also a good and decent man, die in prison. Release and pardon him now.

    Thank you,
    Ann Shannon

    • Ann this is a great letter! Thank You. I just sent in an e-mail and had no problem. Every once in awhile the e-mail page has problems, so I suggest you try again. Did you remember to look at the “who would you like your comment to go to” at the top of the required field? I’ve forgotten to do that a few times. Please let me know if you still have problems.

  4. Bonnie, I tried to copy and paste a letter to Obama through whitehouse.gov, and it won’t send! soooo frustrating!
