Update; January 28, 2016 > Leonard Peltier’s Life is in danger from a treatable but potentially deadly Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm. Leonard has NOT been afforded the necessary surgical intervention he needs to prevent his death (which could happen at any time if the aneurysm ruptures). This is Medical Neglect & Indifference…and it is unconstitutional. Your time to do right will slip away if Leonard dies in Prison. I urge you to act accordingly to help save his life!
January 3, 2016
Dear President Obama and Others who should be concerned;
2016 — This is now your last full year as President of the United States. Mazel Tov (Congratulations)! I wonder if your tenure has flown by like a speeding bullet or has dragged on like a man doing 40 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. You’ve heard from me more times than I can count since your first day in Office and you’ll keep hearing from me until your last full day as President. Knowing that there will be an end date in my communicating with you should undoubtedly give you a sigh of relief; I can after all be tenacious at times when the stakes are high. I’ve written to you in many voices through the years via letters, e-mails and tweets; I’ve tried my best to be respectful. Since this is your last year and I know you’re looking to push important issues through before you leave, I’ll cut right to the chase. This year once again you have the opportunity to use your Executive Power; I hope you take full advantage of it as you’ve been reticent to use it much thus far. Come on, you know full well where I’m heading with this….You MUST grant Executive Clemency to Federal Prisoner Leonard Peltier #89637-132. As of February 6th, 2016 he’s been illegally and wrongfully incarcerated for 40 years. 40 years — Can YOU wrap your head around this? I doubt you can, even individuals I know who have spent years in prison cannot fathom doing a 40 year stretch…especially when there is no factual proof of their guilt, there is unblemished public knowledge of malfeasance within the federal/state/local justice systems, and there are continuous on-going personal violations of Constitutional/Legal, Civil, Human, and Treaty Rights put upon them…*referenced by the United States Constitution, the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and the Geneva Convention.
Plans for future Criminal Justice Reform/ Prison Reform will not be as sweeping and magnanimous as some have said or promised. How can they be when Mass Incarceration is Big Business in America? There is no fast track to release men and women who are imprisoned not due to guilt but because of their political affiliations, their racial/ethnic status, their socio-economic class, their mental and/or physical infirmities and more. There are too many individuals in the prisons, jails, and detention/detainment centers who are similar to Leonard Peltier; locked away for someone else’s crime….but as long as there’s a body for a cell, it doesn’t really matter if that body is innocent or guilty. Justice in America is anything but Just. This sad reality like a broken record plays itself out over and over again. Too many accept this reality and don’t care to change the status quo because it will not bring them gain. Much of humanity has become little more than meaningless commodities. What a sad statement about the Human Condition. What a sad statement about America.
For the past 7 years I have pleaded, politely demanded and justified the reasoning for Leonard’s Freedom. The clarity has not dimmed, if anything it has become brighter – a beacon of light. There is no reason NOT to release Leonard Peltier; he is aging, his health is failing, the cost to keep him incarcerated is high and he poses no risk to others because he is Innocent. The only reason Leonard is still imprisoned is because the FBI wants to keep him imprisoned. They refuse to admit wrong-doing of any kind to anyone and in Leonard’s case their wrong-doing towards him and other Native Americans is public record and impressively belligerent to say the least. The FBI’s actions in 1975 which resulted in the deaths of their 2 agents were incorrigible. It’s hard to look back to that time and then be in the present moment as we see nothing has changed. Whether FBI, Police, Military, or others —— those who are supposed to “protect and serve” have full reign to make mistakes, flaunt their prejudices, and blame their victims with impunity while very rarely paying the price for their disastrous and deadly actions.
Since 1976, no President has stepped up and seriously looked at the InJustice put upon Leonard by the FBI and other agents of the Federal Justice System. Are YOU willing to do this? Are YOU willing to grant Leonard Peltier executive clemency? Do YOU have the courage? Let me end here with this poem written by Leonard…I think it simply says why his FREEDOM is imperative.
I AM EVERYONE
by Leonard Peltier (Prison Writings; my life is my Sun Dance ©1999)
I am everyone who ever died without a voice or a prayer or a hope or a chance…
Everyone who ever suffered for being an Indian, for being human, for being indigenous, for being free, for being Other, for being committed….
I am every one of them. Every single one. Yes. Even you.
I AM EVERYONE.
Once again I respectfully Thank You for your time and consideration.
