I Come From A World Where Against Extreme Odds, The Underdogs Have Risen!

While writing to President Barack Obama in 2010 asking him to grant Executive Clemency to Federal Prisoner Leonard Peltier, this poem took root and was written shortly after I finished writing my letter to the President.  BFW

I come from a world where against extreme odds, the underdogs have risen! Have you heard them in the night or in the morning’s light clawing their way up from killing fields, prison cells, hospital beds, and their own parched souls?

I come from a world where against extreme odds, the underdogs have risen! Have you seen them in the day or at the moon’s first glow traveling weary from the mines, the oil rigs, the strawberry fields, the kitchen, the work-a-day world, the master’s bed?

I come from a world where against extreme odds, the underdogs have risen! Have you felt them as their bruised knees knelt in prayer, as their hunched shoulders swayed at wailing walls, as their bodies swung from poplar trees, as their eyes looked to the heavens hoping to glimpse the divine?

I come from a world where against extreme odds, the underdogs have risen! The Black man has survived, ripped from his Motherland, enduring the shackles of servitude, watching children sold raped and murdered through the ages of the master’s whip real or long-ago shadowed.

I come from a world where against extreme odds, the underdogs have risen! The Red man has survived, brutalized on his own land, observing his own genocide, grasping for his sacred identity drowned out in enculturation.

I come from a world where against extreme odds, the underdogs have risen! The Brown man has survived, driven from fertile rain forests and desolate deserts, evicted from borders entrapped in barbwire, reaching for the veiled solace that is used to suffocate his breath.

I come from a world where against extreme odds, the underdogs have risen! The Yellow man has survived, napalm glowing on his skin, BOMB blasts to smithereens, interned for protection of the ignorant.

I come from a world where against extreme odds, the underdogs have risen! The Disenfranchised have survived, castrated against their will, starving from government cheese, hidden behind closed doors and budget cuts.

I come from a world where against extreme odds, the underdogs have risen! Throughout our inception Humanity has survived….we have survived the harsh climates, the creatures that go bump in the night, the plagues….and we have SURVIVED EACH OTHER!!!! Tell me the truth; do you know how we have done it? We have done it by sheer perseverance, we have done it by listening to that whispering still voice deep inside urging us on, we have done it by holding on to one and other, we have done it by the power of LOVE, we have done it surrounded by GRACE. WOZA!! {South African word for Rise-Up}. LOVE

My ♥ Longs for PEACE! BFW
